Good exception handling practices

1. Extend existing exceptions with your own classes to distinguish between different types of errors and allow for easily catching them
2. Exceptions should be declared in a throws clause to make it easy for people using the API to tell what exceptions need handled
3. Avoid catching the Exception class, and instead have individual catch arms for different exception types
